Facility Security Officer Job

Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is hiring multiple Facility Security Officers to help protect County facilities, employees, and members of the public.

Facility Security Officers are uniformed, non-sworn public-safety employees assigned to facilities throughout Multnomah County. Officers regulate access to County buildings, monitor alarm systems, respond to emergencies, assist visitors, coordinate with law-enforcement and corrections personnel, and help maintain a safe environment for County services.

The Facility Security Unit operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is a completely in-person position and is not eligible for remote work.

Primary responsibilities

  • Control and monitor access to Multnomah County facilities.
  • Staff assigned security posts and maintain safe public spaces.
  • Monitor and respond to fire, duress, and facility alarms.
  • Assist law-enforcement and corrections personnel with coordinated public-safety activities.
  • Respond to emergencies, disruptive behavior, and people experiencing mental-health crises.
  • Use communication, conflict-management, and de-escalation techniques.
  • Accept bail funds, process clothing exchanges, and issue property releases.
  • Maintain visitor records, daily activity logs, and incident reports.
  • Provide visitors with information about jail operations, the justice system, and community resources.
  • Testify in court when required.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • At least two years of combined work experience, volunteer experience, military service, or post-high-school education.
  • A minimum age of 18.
  • A valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one by the first day of employment.
  • The ability to pass criminal-record and employment-reference checks.
  • The ability to complete mandatory defensive-tactics and OC pepper-spray training, including exposure.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience using personal computers.
  • Customer-service experience in a busy, high-volume environment.
  • Strong communication skills, empathy, and patience.
  • Training or experience in public safety, law enforcement, facility security, or social services.
  • College coursework in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, or communications.

Training and scheduling

New officers complete a six-month trial-service period and participate in field training at different posts and facilities. During training, employees may work day, swing, graveyard, weekend, and holiday shifts.

After trial service, regular shifts and days off are assigned through a seniority-based bidding process. Overtime may be required. Facility Security Officers are considered essential employees during severe weather, emergencies, pandemics, and disasters.
